Is Daura the new Minna ?
The political landscape in Nigeria is witnessing a fascinating trend, as politicians from various walks of life are flocking to Daura, Katsina State, to pay homage to former President Muhammadu Buhari. This phenomenon is not new in Nigeria's political sphere, as Minna, Niger State, was once the epicenter of political pilgrimage, with visitors trooping to visit former President Ibrahim Babangida.
Recently, the former Vice President and Presidential aspirant, Atiku Abubakar, visited Buhari in Daura, tagging it a "Sallah greeting". This visit spark
ed interest, given their political differences and the fact that Atiku came second to Bola Ahmed Tinubu in the 2023 presidential poll.
Another notable visit was that of Nasir El-Rufai, former FCT Minister and former Governor of Kaduna State, a prominent political figure in the north. His visit was significant, given his rumored fallout with the present administration of Tinubu, which led to his removal from the ministerial list.
The frequency of visits from northern political figures to Daura has raised questions about the political dynamics at play. Is Daura the new Minna, the go-to place for political validation and influence? And is northern Nigeria "cooking something" politically?
The answers to these questions remain unclear, but the trend suggests a shift in political power dynamics. Daura has become a hub for political networking and strategizing, with Buhari as the central figure. The visits may signify a quest for political relevance, endorsement, or a mere display of courtesy.
As Nigeria's political landscape continues to evolve, the significance of Daura as a political destination will be worth watching. Is it a temporary phenomenon or a permanent shift in the country's political architecture? Only time will tell.
